|
As you read these pages describing the life and mission of this great congregation, I know you will discover an opportunity for your own participation in a dynamic Christ-centered community which emphasizes personal faith and spirituality, relationship in Christian Community and outreach in the world around us.
The Mission of The United Methodist Church of Evergreen is to reflect the image of God as Creator, Redeemer, and Inspirer; an image revealed in God's world and in the life and death of Jesus Christ. In the United Methodist tradition emphasizing Scripture, Tradition, Reason, and Experience, we strive to reflect God's image by serving God, one another, the community and the world; and by proclaiming and living in ways that reflect love, compassion, and forgivenesss as revealed through Jesus Christ.

A proposed new Social Creed is being presented at The United Methodist Church General Conference at its meeting April 23-May 2 in Fort Worth, Texas. The new creed was created by the General Board of Church and Society at the direction of the 2004 General Conference in commemoration of the denomination’s first social creed adopted 100 years ago. If adopted, it will be only the third Social Creed in the denomination’s history.

It is April, and taxes are on our minds. When Jesus said that we should "Render unto Caesar...." he was saying that Christians are obliged to pay our taxes, just as everyone else does. He was not commenting on whether the taxes were fair or unfair. Even if our churches do everything possible to feed, cloth and otherwise aid the poor, as Christians we also have a duty to speak out against economic injustices, including injustices in our tax policies.
A recent article in the Denver Post (January 24, 2008) brought to light the issue of tax injustice. The article was based on an interview with Susan Pace Hamill, a member of the United Methodist Church who is a law professor at the University of Alabama and also holds a master's degree in divinity. In her new book, As Certain As Death, A Fifty-State Survey of State and Local Tax Laws, Ms. Hamill found that the poor pay higher taxes as a percentage of their income. In Colorado, taxpayers in the lowest quintile (incomes less than $17,000) bear an income tax burden equal to 9.9% of their incomes, while taxpayers in the top 1% (incomes over $692,000) bear a tax burden of just 6.1%. Sales and excise taxes in Colorado are even more regressive, because taxpayers in the lowest quintile bear a tax burden of 6% and those in the top 1% bear a tax burden of just 1%. This inequity is largely because the poor must spend almost all their income for necessities that are subject to sales taxes, while the rich can invest much of their income and avoid sales taxes on such investments.
What does this have to do with us, individually and as a church? We don’t make tax policy. But we elect the legislators who do, and we can write letters to our legislators about issues of social justice. Ms. Hamill emphasizes two fundamental principles as the scriptural basis of tax justice: “Thou shall not oppress the poor,” and “Thou shall make sure that the poor enjoy at least a minimum opportunity to better their situation...”
In 2004 the General Conference of the United Methodist Church passed a resolution about tax justice: “…Be it hereby resolved that, State Taxation Task Forces are established in each annual conference at their next session to examine the tax codes of their states, following the guidelines in Professor Hamill’s book The Least of These (Fair Taxes and the Moral Duty of Christians); and that the task forces in each Conference prepare a strategy for action to promote and establish a just tax code in every state; and that strategies seek to enlist the cooperation and support of all local churches through tax education and advocacy; … and recommend continued action to the General Conference of 2008.” (Book of Resolutions of the United Methodist Church 2004, Resolution #228) The Church and Society Committee urges our congregation to give prayerful thought to how we can promote just tax policies.

No Table Talk

Our church website mail system is currently being attacked by spammers. They are using our mail system to send spam emails to people to avoid being tracked. We are working with the server technicians to try to get this under control and thwart their efforts.
Unfortunately, in the process we have broken our ability to email our own Table Talk newsletter. We hope to have a resolution to this soon.
Until this is resolved. Please just visit the website. All of the news from Table Talk is simply taken from the website anyway. So you won't miss any news if you simply visit the church website.

News articles and Calendar events are two different things. You may need to schedule something on the calendar AND announce it with a news story.

· Assembly looks to future of spirituality, justice and witness Approving a substantial change in priorities and culture, the World Council of Churches (WCC) 9th Assembly completed its meeting with prayer in Porto Alegre Thursday, and agreed to give priority to spirituality, ecumenical formation, global justice and prophetic witness.
· Assembly message invites churches and world to unite in prayer for transformation The "Message" of the 9th Assembly is an invitation to prayer. In proposing the document for adoption, message committee moderator Wendy Evans explained that the message is neither a report nor an exhaustive listing of concerns, but that "the message reflects the heart of the Assembly".
· New WCC central committee elects officers and executive committee Walter Altmann, Gennadios of Sassima and Margaretha Hendriks-Ririmasse are, respectively, the new moderator and vice moderators of the WCC central committee.
· Policy committee seeks to strengthen common calling The 9th Assembly of the World Council of Churches today approved recommendations to "strengthen the WCC in the search for visible unity, enhance its ability to represent the member churches, and build new bridges for relationships and trust with other Christian churches not currently within its fellowship".
· WCC opens new channels for youth involvement The World Council of Churches 9th Assembly sent a strong message on Thursday 23 February that youth are an integral part of the WCC's work, and their voices need to be heard.
