Luke 6:1-5; Deuteronomy 5:12-15

The 10 Commandments hinge on the agency of the Hebrew people, no longer slaves, to make life-giving choices about being together in community. One of the most empowering, enlivening, and rebellious choices they can make is to observe Sabbath, God’s commanded rest. Jesus reminds his disciples and the Pharisees that the true meaning of Sabbath is about law, but a gift from God and a reminder that we are freed from the requirements of the oppressive Pharaoh. In a world where exhaustion is a status symbol, how can we reprioritize our time to embrace Sabbath?
