In the aftermath of Jesus’ resurrection, the disciples were cowering in fear not knowing that Jesus had risen. Instead they were locked away in a place where they felt safe. Mary Magdalene had announced Jesus’ resurrection to the disciples, but they didn’t seem to believe her – or even if they did, they were still locked up by their own fear. Fear will do that sometimes – keep us from opening ourselves up to being vulnerable. Fear can lock our minds into maintaining despair. Being locked in a room can take many forms in our lives – fear of facing someone or something, the need for approval in order to feel worthy, fear that we are not doing enough, fear that we are all alone. Today’s story reminds us that even behind locked doors, Jesus can still be with us. Jesus can pass through our fear and remind us that peace is with us!
